When Is The Right Time To Euthanize?

When you first got your pet, you probably fell in love and wanted him or her to stay with you for a lifetime. Unfortunately, even the healthiest of pets will succumb to disease or old age even though we wish it would never happen. It is best to work with your veterinarian to help diagnose the condition of your pet. Veterinarians are able to guide you through the process of diagnosing a disease. They will let you know your options in regard to tests that can be performed. They will also let you know if a referral to a veterinary specialist might be needed. Veterinarians can also help you to decide when it is time. But ultimately, it boils down to your personal decision based on what you observe about the behavior, attitude, and quality of life of your pet.

The following are several signs that may indicate your pet is no longer enjoying a good quality of life:

  • Your pet is having trouble breathing, weakness, or extreme lethargy.

  • Your pet has nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea that cannot be resolved by treatment from a veterinarian.

  • Your pet experiences chronic pain that doesn’t go away even with medication.

  • Your pet finds it very difficult to walk or cannot get up.

  • Your pet is refusing to eat or drink.

  • Your pet is having trouble urinating or defecating.

  • Your pet has had a significant behavior change and has lost interest in his or her favorite activities.

Dr. Helen Chuang was absolutely wonderful and reassuring. With the numerous symptoms our 13-year-old female cattle dog faced each passing day, we had to make the dreadful decision of when to relieve her of the burdens each day delivered. Dr. Helen was so kind and reassuring to our sweet dog, and she was equally patient and validating to us. She took her time with our ailing dog, and she took her time to explain everything to us. We want to thank Dr. Helen for her amazing grace and compassion through a very difficult day for us. I would highly recommend Restful Paws to anyone deciding to do an in-home euthanasia for your beloved pet.

Restful Paws allowed our beloved 16 year old dog, Millie, to die at home, amongst those who loved her, without the added stress of an off-site vet visit. I cannot more highly recommend Dr. Patricia Lowe who, with compassion, sensitivity and kindness, not only explained each step in the transition process beforehand but allowed us to grieve privately. It was a particular gift to us that our pet was spared any discomfort or fear. Thank you for making this extraordinary service available.

Restful Paws is amazing. They are kind, compassionate, and understanding. This was one of the hardest things I've ever done and they made the process so easy. It allowed me to focus on my sweet dog instead of all of the intricacies of what I needed to do to make sure he was comfortable. Thank you Restful Paws for creating an incredible memory in a less-than-ideal situation.
